Are there universal best hours for a private-hire driver?
No. Strong slots depend on your city, your starting area, local events and how many drivers are out at that moment. Generic advice describes an average that is nobody's actual day. The right question is not “what are the best hours” but “what are mine” — and two weeks of records are enough to answer it.
An hour behind the wheel has a near-fixed cost — the share of insurance, lease and depreciation falls due whether you drive full or empty. What the hour brings in, however, varies twofold between slots. That asymmetry makes your schedule as powerful a lever as sorting rides.

How do you measure your best hours?
For every slot you work, note two figures: what you took in and the real hours of the slot. Divide. After two weeks, rank your slots by euros per hour: the gap between your best and worst hours appears, and it is usually far bigger than expected. That ranking is your ideal schedule.
Compare comparable slots: Tuesday 7–10 am against other Tuesday mornings, not against a Saturday night. Four or five occurrences of the same slot are enough to show a trend.
Those euros per hour are gross revenue — enough to compare your slots with each other. The €300-day guide shows how to go from gross to what is really left.

Why is a full hour worth double?
Because your budget of hours is capped — by regulation, fatigue and life outside the car. A slow hour consumes the same budget as a strong one, for half the takings. Moving one working hour from a weak slot to a strong one therefore raises your income without adding a single minute of work.
The arithmetic of the move: one hour at €20 replaced by one at €40 brings in €20 more per working day — in the order of €400 over a twenty-day month, without driving more. Redo it with your own slots: your gap is the one that counts.

Should you drive during slow hours?
Only if the hour at least covers its variable costs and returns something above them. An hour that does not is worth less than zero: it wears the vehicle, consumes your budget of hours and tires you for nothing. Taking it out of the schedule is a gain, not a retreat. Off-peak, the alternative is adjusting your minimum fare — never below your costs.
The dead-time guide explains why a waiting hour is never free, and the minimum-fare guide how to set the floor by time slot.
